Welcome to Demeter

In Demeter we create an atmosphere of independence and encourage the children to take responsibility for their learning, in preparation for the rest of their school journey. Miss Gilbert will be the class teacher. Mrs Hay provides learning support throughout the whole week.

Our Learning Updates

I Spy

In the autumn term, we will be finding out all about ourselves, naming parts of our body and thinking about how we and animals have changed since being babies. We will be using our new Jigsaw character ‘Jack’ to support our understanding of different feelings and emotions and how they relate to ‘real life’ experiences.

We will have daily phonics to start our morning focusing on using ‘Fred talk’ to read and write words. In English, we will be reading a number of different books thinking about words that rhyme and retelling the stories that we have read. We will be working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We will be extending our learning by using adjectives for describing characters and settings. In Maths we will be focusing on the numbers from 0-20 through the exploration of place value and counting and sorting activities

Welcome back after our half term break……..

Hopefully all of you have spotted our brilliant bookworm window art curtesy of Mr Craig. This links in with the topic for this term, ‘Bookworms’. We hope to inspire a lot more reading at home, enjoyment of being read to, to hearing audio books and watching clips of other people reading books and how they use their voices to show the different characters. We watched the wonderful Rik Mayall read George’s Marvellous Medicine at the beginning of the week.

We have begun to look at our class book, ‘Bob Robber and Dancing Jane’. The children have only had the very beginning read to them, but everyone produced some amazing sentence work yesterday with accurate sentence structure and use of adjectives.

In Maths we’ve been working on our part, part, whole number partitioning knowledge up to 10 using cherry models, practical working and some of the children taking to recording and writing the equations for the models.

In PE the children have been practising lots of gymnastics. They have learnt how to jump and land safely, different gymnastic positions and how to hold them.

We practised our sequencing skills in RE looking at the Christmas Story.

We were so proud of all the children who came out with the rest of the school for a final push on ‘Beat the Street’. It was triple point day on the last day and they were so sensible walking with their partners and waiting patiently to activate the fobs and cards. Team Purple!!!!!

We have started building our special gingerbread person with Jigsaw Jack today. We will be adding on items of clothing each week. Each item will have a special words relating to the theme ‘celebrating difference’.

Today has been an exciting afternoon with our very special visitor, James Dasaolu. The children had the opportunity to do an activity involving four different exercises in a circuit training environment. When then had an assembly where he spoke about his career and achievements.

Homework and spellings have been sent out. Homework is due in on Monday for everyone, and spellings will be tested on Wednesday. Please make sure only the diary and the two school reading books are kept in the clear wallets.

Has anyone gained a purple PE top? We have a child who is missing one and one wasn’t left in class at the end of half term.

Please prompt your child in the morning if they have letters to go in our red box. We will not be aware if things are left in their bookbags and letters might get missed. Equally so please check your child’s book bag as some important letters went out this week.

It was lovely to meet all of the parents during Parents Evening, thank you for being prompt and apologies for those that were a little later than planned.

We would like to start to put up some more photos on the blog, and ask if next week you could let us know if you are happy for your child to be photographed for this. We will have a yes/no list that will require your signature. The children really want to show you what we do during the day.
